occupational therapy

Occupational Therapy focuses on our member’s ability to perform the broad range of everyday life activities. OT promotes independence by improving the skills required to perform these activities and/or teaching alternative ways to accomplish them.

In order to receive OT, a physician’s referral is required. After our first interview and meeting, the therapist will create a customized plan designed to improve skills and maximize functional abilities based on priorities and personal goals as specified on the plan of care given by the physician. Each of our members respond differently to treatments, so our therapists will consider a person’s physical, psychological, and social well-being, as well as environmental factors when developing a plan of care and treatment. We work on educating the patient and the family about how our OT professionals can help re-build lost skills and restore lost confidence, mentor people on how to control their own behavior, anxiety management techniques, learning difficulties or poor social skills, e.g. in handling money and social interaction.

Occupational therapy helps individuals regain day to day skills such as dressing and feeding. It may be applicable after:

  • A stroke
  • Heart Failure
  • A heart attack
  • Hip or Knee Replacement Surgery
